There are a number of Terms and abbreviations unique to eBay which are explained below
- Bid Shielding
- putting in a high bid to put off other bidders, which you intend to withdraw near the end of the auction to let your lower bid in another ID win.
- BIN
- Buy it Now.
- Bump
- to post a small insignificant message, when you want to raise the profile of a thread but have nothing to add to it (Also means "Bring Up My Posting")
- EOA
- End of Auction.
- FB
- Feedback
- Feedback Roulette
- Leaving it until the last minute, 90 days from Auction End, to leave negative
feedback, in the hope that the other party does not have time to retaliate.
- Flamed
- to get a lot of criticism following a controversial view
- FVF
- Final Value Fees, the ones you can claim back if a bidder does not pay.
- NARU
- Not a registered user (usually someone expelled for breaking eBay rules)
- Nibbling
- Making repeated bids in an attempt to find / exceed the current highest bidders proxy.
- NPB
- Non-Paying Bidder. The ones that sellers hate the most. If you get three official NPB warnings following complaints by sellers who claim their FVF back, you get suspended or NARUed, an eBay members NPB count is not visible to other members.
- Numpty
- EBay word for someone a bit daft
- Pinkies / Pinks
- EBay employees whose postings have a pink heading to show their authority over us mere mortals. The main ones you will see on the discussion boards are Henry, Tai and Bev. You may also see wonder woman Wynonna if there is a payment problem.
- Posting ID
- an user ID that someone uses just to post on the boards, to keep their views from affecting their buying or selling activities.
- Shilling
- To bid on an auction when you have no intention of purchasing the item, to either inflate the price of an item you or a friend / relative are selling or just doing it for 'a laugh', out of spite etc.
- Sniping
- Making a bid at the last possible moment before an auction closes
- Trolls
- people who post only to wind up other people or stir up trouble.
